so i finally gave Liars' "Drum's Not Dead" a listen. i like it. i've only listened to it twice maybe, so it's really too early to tell what i really think of it. BUT, i have to bring some attention to something. the song "Drum gets a glimpse" is more than "a little" similiar to Animal Collective's "The Softest Voice".
first off, they're both in the same key.
second, the strumming is pretty hazy in both of them.
third, falsettos.
i'm sure more can be found.

first week, anything goes assigment, topic: "draw a cowboy". that's it.
i don't cope too well with freedom. i spent a whole day of just experimenting and trying different stuff out, considered illustrating the song Cowboy Dan by modest mouse, or a big detailed drawing of a bar-fight(hence the words beat-down),

this is the final. note how it has NOTHING to do with the process work. it came to fruition using only one tiny doodle of a sketch on bond paper, that i don't really remember drawing. probably finished around 4 or 5 am, didn't take too long to actually make, but by then my mind was shot, my eyes were shot, coffee and ginger ale were wearing off, and the bed was singing to me. no matter. i decided to do something with the theme of trust, and i'm pretty content with it, i think.:

Broadcast played after atlas sound. i wish we could've stuck around to see the whole set. the bass vibrations were making shit bleed with itself. dimensions were shifting. chris's eyes were becoming a teapot, and then melding with my teeth that were shrinking and growing. good music.
the visuals were insanely beautiful.

chris and i saw atlas sound at Lee's. Bradford was excellent. he was in a weird kind of mood, most comparable to that of the singer of The most serence republic. can't always tell when that guy's joking.
the sound guy interruption was perfect. acoustic version of Logos was on point. he stopped in the middle of it and said to the audience "stop looking around!".
great banter. "on the way to the show i saw some zombies today [toronto zombie walk],
and they said to me, "you are one of us!" and......... I said...... 'i'm not sure,'"
i wish he played more oldies but promotion is what it is (river card would've made the night perfect). i hope i get to see bradford again. on the way to the show found a 20. random fact.

things that kinda sucked: people sucking at the china banks spot. alex olson's hair. shitty announcers. shitty music for those watching online. same old tricks. that dude with the shades that wouldn't move from the bottom of the manny pad's drop at the 12 stair. i might re-watch the whole thing and draw from stills.

i think people focus on No Age's DIY merit badges too much and not enough about their music. i think it doesn't matter if it's punk. Or pop, or noise, or whatever. i personally think "Nouns" sucked. if you you gave me their CD 2 years ago and didn't tell me a think about them, i'd say, "this sucks". then again, if you didn't explain to me the social and cultural significance of Joy Division, i'd think half their songs were awful and annoying too. maybe that's something I wonder about these days, do any factors outside the actual music matter? does bradford cox's physical condition make the music sound any better? is it a fun fact? does it matter that the Shaggs don't suck on purpose?

i won't get into detail, but i had to walk out mid- present openning (we opened ours on christmas eve due to convinience) and chill the fuck out in my room.
i'd give back any present i recieved just so my mom could get something NICE from my dad. kinda backwards compared to last year.
i kinda also wish it wasn't considered NORMAL for little kids to act like fucking brats on christmas. or that your parents just got booze as presents. (sorry) or that your dad would start watching some obnoxiously loud tv show while we're spending "family time". or that he'd tell your mom how LITTLE (not how MUCH) he spent on her.

so a couple of days ago, more like a week i guess, i focused my board, playing a friendly yet heated game of SKATE with danny. broke the damn wood on an overzealous 3 flip. great. kept playing, since the deck was still in one piece. 2 letters and 12 minutes later, it's like in 3 pieces. awesome. like a week ago sean ("surly bike" guy)indirectly gave me a garbage find that he knew would come in handy for me. it was a piece of shit mongoose skateboard. so cheap, wal-mart and canadian tire had to play rock paper scissors on who WON'T carry it, god. judging by the area where it was found, i imagine it belonged to a ghetto-ass kid that pushed on that damn thing for months to and fro the soup kitchen, left it out in the rain a couple of times, maybe let his pet donkey try to ollie on it, and probably slept on it when his bed was too urine stained, so he owned it. i imagine it's also this kid who took a sharpie and wrote west 49 in a false and deceiving fashion on one of the trucks. truly a sad sad thought. i hope you don't think i think poverty's funny. because i don't. the board's cheap ass "pretend" glue totally evaporated and let all the layers delaminate and warp. looked like a moldy starfruit. but shit's not so bad. the bearings are still decent, the wheels turn and withstand bumps and cracks pretty stubbornly. there's still hope. i skated to work on the damn thing a couple of times, and afterwords even had a couple of mini-manny-sessions on this lame pad. it was the most fun i've had in months. is that weird?
tonight after work, i was skating home on this hunchback of a board, when i thought about something. this is fun because it's not meant to be fun. the last time i skated a "non-professional" board was when i broke the nose off my "killer loop" board i got in national sports like 7 years ago maybe. it's like when it's garbage day and you find a garbage bike and you can still ride it around and it feels like you took something and made it fun and useful. i realized i've been taking skateboards for granted. when this hobby/sport/lifestyle started, no one could predict or fully control how their board would respond. that was the beauty of it.
like the time i took a school binder in grade 9 or 10 and stuck trucks and wheels on it and skated it around the school. moving without walking felt special again. now when you're cruising on your board, like through campus or something you feel like a goon.
back to the present. so i'm riding this shit-pile and busting manuals across this pad and what-have-you, and then i try a 3 shuv, and break the nose off. now i have nothing.
enjoy whatever board you have, in whatever way you can. your board isn't SUPPOSED to do shit. it's your job. i could switch to riding wal-mart boards in a second. but that's considered blasphemous, and i'd rather support brands that actually give something to skateboarding. but i'm just saying. skate anything you can skate on, and make it look fun and easy, and have fun on it. i'm probably still gonna skate the mongoose till it stops moving.
